Daringold: Deciphering the Bisbrook Riddle

Picture
St John the Baptist Church - Bisbrooke (Rutland) - Home of Daringold Wyles (nee Crowe)
We visited "Bisbrook" (or "Bysbrook") during the afternoon of July 29th, 2025 - on the way back to our holiday cottage in Easton-on-the-Hill - after visiting Rockingham Castle. Bisbrook (in Rutland) is the place of origination register for "Daringold Crowe" (daughter of Bisbrook local - Robert Crowe). Robert and Daringold are buried under the floor of the vestry of St Mary's Church - Duddington. The vestry was built around 1872 - with an old "Wyles Tomb" being dismantled to make space. By way of compensation - the names of the four occupants were engraved on the foot of the East-facing vestry wall:

We have gathered here, photographs and videos of Bisbrook (2025), together with the four Record Cards that mentions this woman. There are inconsistencies. Although it is recorded that the couple married in 1623 - Card 1 suggests that the wedding took place not in Duddington or Bisbrook - but rather the nearby "Barrowden". Card 1 also suggests that Daringold is called "Darimgold" and that her surname is either "Bromby" or "Bramby". This could be a different couple - but the coincidences are too many. I would suggest the scrivener made a number of errors (until proven otherwise). On all other Record Cards (which detail Court Records) she is referred to clearly as possessing the surname "Crowe" - although even then - the first-name is often given as "Daringould". Over the years, I have approached two leading academics in the UK (from Nottingham and Oxford Universities) that specialise in the origins and history of British names - and both have stated that there is no such name as "Daringold" (as far as they aware) and that either the stone mason got it wrong - or we are reading the gravestone incorrectly. However, a hypothesis has been formed (see the above link). Whatever the case, we know that Robert Wyles was baptized 3.11.1605 and died during 1682 (he was 77-years old). Daringold Wyles died in 1668. Robert Wyles was around 18-years old when he married Daringold Crowe. If Daringold Crowe was around 18-years old when she was married in 1623  - then she was also born in in 1605. When Daringold Wyles died in 1668 she would have been 63-years old. When a transfer of land occurred during April 1668 - Daringold still appears to be alive. Therefore, it may be logically assumed (given the data we currently possess) that Robert Wyles (1605-1682) was 77-yesrs old when he died - whilst his wife Daringold Wyles (nee Crowe) [1605-1668] was 63-years old when she died. Obviously, as more data becomes available, the birth date of Daringold might have to be revised.
There are four reference cards gathered from the Marriage and Court Records of the Duddington and surrounding areas - that mention "Daringold" and on balance of probabilities - state her surname was indeed "Crowe":
1) Diane Wyles discovered this original "Marriage Registry" card online which states the following: 'Robert Wyles & Darinngold Bromby married 12th June 1623.' Further details attached to this card read 'Marriage 12th JUNE 1623 Barrowden, Rutland, England. Marriage between Robert Wyles and "Darimgold" - "Bramby" or "Bromby" - with the ceremony taking place on June 12th, 1623 at a place called "Barrowden" (see picture below)

2) Northants Record Card Reads - '20th July 1623 1) Robert Wyles of Duddington, Yeoman & wife Elizabeth & son Robert Wyles 2) Robert Crowe of Bysbrooke, Rutland, Yeoman & daughter Daringould.' This card goes on to explain a transfer of land ownership - possibly as a dowry for Daringold.

3) - recorded in two-parts - Northants Record Card reads - '4th April 1668 Settlement 1) Robert Wyles of Duddington Gentleman & wife Daringould, son James & wife Joane (nee Jackson) 2) Mr Jackson of Duddington, Gentleman Mr Wilson of Castle Bytham, Lincs, Gentleman' - pertaining to the transference of land - presumably to James & Joane.
