Ketton War Memorials - St Mary the Virgin Church
Just to the right of the South Door of the St Mary the Virgin Church in Ketton stands an elongated stone cross atop two square plinths. On the four-sides of the second plinth are recorded the names of those killed on active service during WWI (1914-1919) & WWII (1939-1945). Although the Armistice (“Ceasefire”) was agreed with Imperial Germany to come into force on November 11th, 1918 – the formal “Surrender” and “Peace Treaty” between Great Britain and Imperial Germany did not happen until 1919 (the US did not sign a similar agreement until 1921). This is why the early WWI Memorials often contain differing end-dates. Eventually the UK government decided that WWI ended in 1918, and this became the official date. The Ketton Monument must have been raised probably around 1919 before the official decision (which was probably post-1921). Moving counter-clockwise:

The Roll for WWII is affixed to the West Wall – whilst the Roll for WWI is affixed to the South Wall. Each Roll records the names of the men (and women) who served during both wars and either survived – and/or were killed on active service:

Gerald Henry Wyles (March 1903 - March 7th 1988)
Death Date March 7th 1988 - Cremation Date March 9th 1988
Remarkably, GH Wyles was "36" in 1939 and "41" in 1945. Despite his mature age - he managed to pass the Basic Training with the young men to enter the British Army during wartime. He then survived the war! At some point after 1921, GH Wyles must have relocated to Ketton (where he was eventually cremated following his death). At present we are unsure of his military unit.
1921 Census was taken on June 19th - with Gerald Wyles recorded as being "18 Years 3 Months" - which suggests he was born during March, 1903.
Birth Place - Collyweston - (Northamptonshire) England
Residence Street Address Beamont Chase, Uppingham
Residence Place Beaumont Chase, Rutland, England
Occupation General Farm Work
Employer Mr Sheton Fariners -
Father - Jeremiah Wyles (b. Duddington) - 52 Years 11 Months - Shepherd and Stocksman
Mother - Eliza Wyles nee Gowain (b. Collyweston) 52 Years 8 Months
Sister - Minnie Wyles (b. Collyweston) - 28 Years 3 Months
Uncle (Brother of Eliza) - William Godwin (b. Collyweston) - 46 Years 8 Months (Gee Wyles deciphered this relationship)
Death Date March 7th 1988 - Cremation Date March 9th 1988
