St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church - Graveyard
Of course, My Great Great Grandfather – John Thomas Wyles (d. 1917) is buried in the “Lower Churchyard - South of South View” (according to available Church Records) in St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church in Uppingham, but as no precise grave number is given (remarkable considering the Church was paid to bury our relative and maintain his resting place), when we visited this week (28.7.2025), we could not locate the grave – and this remains the situation even after contacting the local Church Authorities. Many of the stones are difficult to read - if any text survives at all. Still, we know our relative is in this graveyard and we can make a record of this fact on this entry:
John Thomas Wyles d. 1917 Aged 57-58 (he was born in either 1859-1860)
'Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/145265089/john_thomas-wyles: accessed July 28, 2025), memorial page for John Thomas Wyles (1859–27 Nov 1917), Find a Grave Memorial ID 145265089, citing St. Peter and St. Paul's Churchyard, Uppingham, Rutland Unitary Authority, Rutland, England; Maintained by FamilyKeeper (contributor 48582578).'
Ironically, “Find a Grave” used the details of our relative without actually “finding his grave” – hence the reason there is no photograph. What a ridiculous situation this is. Still, we will try to remedy this situation in due course.
