Phillimore’s Lincolnshire Marriage Registers Volume 6 Marriages at Long Bennington and Foston, 1560 to 1837 Marriages at Foston, 1646 to 1657 and 1776 to 1837 Marriages at Westborough cum Doddington, 1564 to 1837 Marriages at Claypole, 1538 to 1837 Marriages at Stubton, 1562 to 1837 Marriages at Long Bennington and Foston, 1560 to 1837 Note.--These Marriages are contained in the following volumes:- Vol. 1. consists of 60 leaves of parchment, measuring 13 by 6 inches, and having each page numbered, stitched into a stout parchment wrapper. This volume contains entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1560 to 1622 inclusive. The sixteenth-century portion is. of course, a transcript of an earlier book. Between May 1604 and Oct 1604 , Long Bennington, like East Stoke and other parishes in Notts. and Lincolnshire, was ravaged by plague, and nearly 300 burials are recorded in those Jun 1604. As in many Lincolnshire parishes the years in the sixteenth century are calculated as beginning at Michaelmas instead of Ladyday ( 25 Mar ) which at Long Bennington only obtained after 1623 , the years from 1599 to 1622 (end of Vol. 1) running from Easter to Easter. Vol. 2., which contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1623 to 1665 , consists of 43 parchment leaves, measuring 14 by 5 1/2 inches, in a parchment cover. Inserted in this are 8 1/2 loose leaves, measuring 13 by 4 1/2 inches, headed "A Foston Register of all the names which in the great Wars when the Church was separated from Bennington and kept out of the Register for the space of fourteen years, that is from the year 1645 to the year 1665." On the first page of this volume is written:- "Surga musa in confusa nam est labor sanus Dicti posita et polita quid est Puritanus." Vol. 3. consists of 33 1/2 leaves of parchment, measuring 15 by 6 1/2 inches, some of the leaves written on one side only. The leaves are stitched together in a limp vellum cover of which the front sheet has been cut away. The whole volume contains entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for both Long Bennington and Foston from 1666 to 1701 inclusive. Vol. 4. consists of 40 parchment leaves, measuring 13 by 10 inches, the entries well written and covering the years 1702 to 1756. Vol. 5. (marked 8 on cover, Nos. 5, 6 and 7 being Baptisms and Burials only) is a book of printed forms on paper leaves, containing Marriages from 1764 to 1777. Vol. 6. (numbered 9 on cover), covering the years 1777 to 1812 , contains Marriages at Bennington only, Foston having a separate register from 1777. Vol. 7. contains Marriages for Long Bennington from 1813 to 1837. These abstracts of Marriages from Vols. 1., 2., 4., 5. and 6. were made in 1908 by the late Rev. M. B. Wynne, then Rector of East and West Allington, by permission of the Rev. David Rees, then Vicar of Long Bennington and Foston, who himself made the abstracts from Vol. 3. ( 1666 - 1701 ). These were checked over by Mr. T. M. Blagg, and have been completed for the years 1813-37 by the Rev. W. Foster Smith, the present Vicar, by whose permission they are now printed. Volume 1. "The true copy of the Register Book of all Christenings, Marriages and Burials from the eight Sunday. Being the 9th day of June in the second year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the Grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland, 1560." [The letters B. and F. in the margin indicate that the parties belonged to Bennington or Foston respectively.]

Phillimore’s Lincolnshire Marriage Registers Volume 7 Marriages at Alford, 1538 to 1837 Marriages at Rigsby with Ailby, 1620 to 1837 Marriages at Beesby, 1565 to 1837 Marriages at Hannah with Hagnaby, 1560 to 1837 Marriages at Markby, 1558 to 1837 Marriages at Maltby. 1561 to 1837 Marriages at Saleby with Thoresthorpe, 1555 to 1837 Marriages at Strubby with Woodthorpe, 1558 to 1837 Marriages at Sutton-le-Marsh, 1561 to 1837 Marriages at Alford, 1538 to 1837 Note.--The Marriage Registers of the parish of Alford from 1538 to 1837 are contained in eight volumes. Volume 1 consists of sixty-four parchment leaves, in limp vellum covers, measuring 16 1/2 in. by 6 1/4 in., and contains Baptisms from 1561 to 1653/4 , Marriages from 1538 to 1653/4 , and Burials from 1538 to 1653/4. It was originally in three parts, and several leaves of the first part, containing Baptisms, are missing. To the year 1598 is evidently a transcript from the paper Registers, and is signed at the bottom of every page--"Joseph Overton, Vic.; William Brockbanks, Richard Stephenson, Churchwardens". Each part is paged down to the end of the transcripts, and the volume begins at page 6 of the Baptisms. On the cover, though nearly illegible, appears to be a certificate that the transcription was properly carried out--"Alford |08| Feb 1538 |dulie| August 1598 | cora me Thomas Round". There is also the following memorandum--"Me. that upon the 29 Ma[y] was preclaymed in Alford, James [6th], Kinge of Scotland, King of this [realm] of England, as next heire appar[ent to the] crowne". On the inside of the covers are entries relating to the Chapelry of Rigsby for 1602 , 1617 - 1621 , and 1628. A large number of entries for Well are also found in this Register. Between Volumes 1 and 2 is a gap from 7 Mar 1653/4 , to 29 Apr 1685 , one volume having been lost. Volume 2, originally in two parts, measuring 16 in. by 7 1/2 in., and 17 in. by 7 in., consists of thirty-four parchment leaves without a cover. It contains Baptisms from 1684 to 1731/2 , Marriages from 1685 to 1731/2 , and Burials from 1678 to 1731/2. Burials from 1678 to 1688 inclusive, "Certified for being buried in wollen according to the Act in that case". Volume 3 consists of thirty-one parchment leaves, 15 1/2 in. by 6 in., bound in vellum boards, inscribed--"A Register of all Persons Married, Christened, and Buried at Alford, Beginning with the year 1732 ". It contains Baptisms from 1732 to 1781 , Marriages from 1732 to 1753-4 , and Burials from 1732 to 1781. According to a note on the cover, it originally consisted of fifty leaves. The Baptisms, from 8 Mar 1756 , to 20 Nov 1775 , are missing. Volume 4.--First use of printed paper forms, 14 1/2 in. by 9 1/2 in., with twelve leaves, the remainder having apparently been removed, bound in vellum. It contains Marriages from 1754 to 1766 , with banns. Volume 5 consists of forty leaves of printed forms, 14 1/2 in. by 9 1/2 in., bound in vellum. It contains Marriages and banns from 1766 to 1801. The many Marriages of soldiers recorded in this, and the following volume, recall the fear of a French invasion on the Lincolnshire coast. But it seems rather strange that such distant Regiments as the Somersetshire Fencible Cavalry and the West Kent Militia should be amongst those chosen to meet it. Volume 6 consists of seventy-one leaves of printed forms, 15 in. by 9 1/2 in., bound in rough calf. It contains Marriages from 1801 to 1812 at one end, and Banns for the same period at the other. Enoch Harden, married 1 Jun 1808 , seems to have supplied Tennyson, whose birth-place is a few miles distant, with a name for the hero of his poem. Volume 7 consists of fifty leaves of printed forms, 15 1/2 in. by 10 in., bound in vellum. It contains Marriages from 1813 to 1836. Volume 8 consists of fifty leaves of printed forms, 15 in. by 10 in., bound in vellum. It contains Marriages from 15 Jun 1836 , to 26 Jun 1837. The parish of Alford includes Rigsby, with its hamlet of Ailby, and Tothby. These Marriage entries have been extracted from the original Registers by the Rev. R. C. Dudding, with the permission of the Rev. C. W. Baron, Vicar of Alford. The copies for the years 1654 to 1685 (from the Transcripts) have been kindly supplied by Canon C. W. Foster, F.S.A.

Phillimore’s Lincolnshire Marriage Registers Volume 8 Marriages at Boultham, 1562 to 1837 Marriages at Bracebridge, 1562 to 1837 Marriages at Waddington, 1563 to 1837 Marriages at Harmston, 1563 to 1837 Marriages at Boothby Graffoe, 1562 to 1837 Marriages at Navenby, 1562 to 1837 Marriages at Wellingore, 1602 to 1837 Marriages at Boultham, 1562 to 1837 Note.--The present Registers of the parish of Boultham commence only in 1716. Consequently, for the earlier Marriage entries, it has been necessary to have recourse to the Bishop's Transcripts at Lincoln. These begin at Michaelmas, 1562 , and the Marriages from that date to the end of 1715 have been copied out by the Rev. Canon Foster, M.A., F.S.A. Of the Registers now at Boultham, the earliest is a thin volume of 19 parchment leaves, 11 by 5 3/4 inches, which contains Baptisms and Burials from 1716 to 1793 , and Marriages from 1716 to 1760 , the entries later than 1754 , being repeated with more particulars in Volume 2., which contains Marriages from 1754 to 1808.
